You can apply online, by phone or with a paper application.

Need Help Getting and Staying Covered?

Local departments of social services (LDSS) are the main providers of many services to Virginia's children, families and adults. If your LDSS benefit program specialist is not available, you may request to speak to a Supervisor or Manager at your Local Agency.

In most cases, your city or county social services department should be the first call for benefits and other services. However, if additional assistance is required, you may contact the Virginia Department of Social Services at citizen.services@dss.virginia.gov.

You can also visit your local department of social services or a local application assistance site.

CoverVA and your LDSS can help if you need:

  • A new Virginia Medicaid (Cardinal Care) or FAMIS ID card to report changes.
  • To check the status of your application or coverage.
  • General information about Medicaid and FAMIS eligibility.
  • Need help resolving a problem with your Cardinal Care coverage and access to healthcare services.

If you are having issues with your Cardinal Care application, enrollment or renewal, contact the Cover Virginia (CoverVA) Call Center Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon at 833-5CALLVA (TDD: 888-221-1590) or submit a request for help through the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS).
